the iPhone and the iPad. Apple has
accordingly introduced a number of
features that make it easier for
businesses to manage devices and still
offer the appropriate security
features. This is particularly
important because as businesses migrate
to bring-your-own-device (BYOD)
policies, they still often want to
manage the data on the device. Back in
2009, with the release of the iPhone
3GS, it added encryption. In the
following year, iOS 4 added a lot of the
mobile device management (MDM)
hooks—things such as forcing
PIN codes and allowing remote wiping of
a device—that many third-party
vendors used to start letting
enterprises manage the devices.
